Seconds: Nice Machine, Don't let your friends ride it!!

About your machine: Its good that you have narrowed it down, It does sound like you have an air leak. I would build an air leak tester out of some PVC ends & some rubber.
The crank seals are a problem expecially if there origional. Except it seems like it would be a beast to start.
Have you checked your key to the flywheel??
