if you're buying a helmet, id go for a name brand one. then you're pretty damn well safe.
Thor makes nice helmets, but they're just HJC helmets on the inside. I know ONE industries are pretty nice helmets, and they're only around 200 dollars.
Check out Craigslist and ebay and stuff, you may be able to find a nice one (Troy Lee Designs, Shoei, Arai, Bell) for pretty cheap.
Basically, get a name brand one, and when you're buying a helmet, you get what you pay for. I know I'd spend 350 bucks on helmet to keep my noggin safe.
