2 stokers and flywheel games I am trying to get my mind around flywheels, I trail ride, and been doing some reading on flywheels, some of the claims for heavy flywheels does not make sense. as I understand it, a heavy flywheel makes the engine rev more slugish, but helps keep from stalling at lower power , a lighter flywheel makes the engine rev zippier, but makes it easier to stall, the claims are that a heavy flywheel may actually increase the rate of acceleration and does not drop off the top end, while increaseing throttle responce and helping engine braking. This sounds like the cure for all your ills, but this does not wash with what I saw when road racing, light flywheels tend to increase rate of acceleration, heavy tend to slow it, light flywheels tend to engin brake better, but require you to be up in the Rpm while exiting a corner, in cars it is a ballance. |
