OK. What is a nikasil cylinder? Is that the coating or w.e they put on some cylinders that you need to re-coat it if u hone it or bore it? I heard that shit costs a lot of money to re-coat and everything. I'm not gonna do this to mine but anyway how would putting new rings on the same piston break a skirt?? J/W.

I think what 370 was saying was that it is a waste of money to replace only the rings/seals of the piston and not replace the piston because you would be running the same worn piston and thus risk breaking the piston.
Basically while it's apart replace it all and save yourself a headache later

what i'm saying is that cheap mother f*ckers get the shaft..... haha

if you reuse a piston you run a good chance of breakign a skirt for this reason. the piston is only good for so long. when they are neglected or fatigued the skirts will break. when teh skirt breaks you have yourself one hell of a mess usually. sometime your talking new crank kinda mess. sometimes flushin out the bottom end will fix the problem but it's no guarantee. just take my advise and when you replace any top end parts you reaplace all parts. if it goes on the piston and your gonna change it change it all including the piston. remember it this way a piston kit costs about $80. and contain rings, circlips, wrist pin, and usually upper rod bearing. if you buy everything but the piston your gonna save about $10. is $10 of savings worth the gamble on possilby ruining a crank, cracking a case, breaking a rod, or even just having to spend the same $80 on a piston kit that you should have in teh first place. oh yeah plus a bore because that dropped skiert is gonna make one hell of a mark. any experianced wrench is gonna tell you the same thing. just in case you need a second opinion

I think you took it the wrong way, I know to replace the piston when rebuilding the topend. I was just wondering how the skirts could break if you didn't. Yes, i know that when a skirt breaks you have a hell of a mess , thats what was wrong with my ds80 when i first bought it. But luckally, only the connecting rod bend and the crank didnt f*ck up. We had to take the whole bottom end apart and clean out all the piston pieces and shit and rebuild the topend. It sucked. So yea i know how much money and how much of a pain in the ass that is when you can just spend about 80 bucks like you said.

Chris is right on Key, Change the whole damn thing. As far as Nickasil all I can say is it sucks. I have seen new cylinders flake and even peal with no time on them at all. And the benefit compared to the cost it just isn't worth it but thats just my opinion.
