Default K&N vs. Foam (Uni, etc.)

Like the title says, K&N vs. Foam (Uni, etc.). Is one better than the other? In which application does one shine over the other? Any info here would be appreciated. Thanks!

foam better for dust, will catch more of the finer particles i hear
k&n max air flow, but still works damn good, just keep it clean and freshly oiled and run an outerwear with em too if u do, my intakes are never dirty , i check before every ride when i clean filter, i cant complain

Yea, that's kind of what I've heard too. I run an open air box with a K&N with K&N Pre-Filter, which I always keep clean and oiled on my R and so far haven't had any complaints. I was just wondering what everyone thought here because I've heard mixed things. A Honda mechanic, and family friend, told me that running the K&N was the worst thing for my R. Then again, he's more into reliability and longevity rather than performance.

I've always used a K&N or something similar with an outerwear. We're usually on sand too so I don't have to worry so much about the fine stuff. Never had a problem with 'em either.

K&N have the most air flow, but they let more stuff in. The pros will run them, but they rebuild engines after each race. I run a foam filter with an outerwears air box cover. I used to run a K&N, prefilter, and air box cover and had no problems with it; I switched just to be safe. I've heard bad things about the K&N, but I can't say I've experienced any.

sand is finer then dirt just so you know, and if you look at a nicely used K&n filter through a light, it can look pretty disterbing, foam for me

Thanks, I've gotten alot of compliments since I came over here just recently...kinda nice. It's a +4, goin to a +6 probably this summer with the new build.

And I know I'm new here and hate to argue...but how is sand finer then dirt? (By dirt I mean dusty trails, etc.) I can see how sand would do more damage then dust...j/c
