Grip Change

How to:

Now this is something that many people have tried to do many different ways. I am going to tell you what I think is the easiest way to change your grips. Now this will only pertain to thumb throttles. I will cover twist throttles in a later “How to”. Hand Grips come in tons of different options. There are hard ones, and soft ones. Gell grips, smooth, and waffle grips. You name it and some one makes them I am sure. So do a little shopping around before you just jump into grips. As I said before there are many ways to change grips, but I am going to give you the fastest and most simple way that I know.

If your current grips are glued on then you will need to remove them. I have found that a razor knife and some elbow grease is the best way to remove glued on grips. Gently split the grip with your knife on top and bottom. Then just peel the 2 halves off. Now you will need to scrape off what is left behind. Be sure to take your time and get all the old glue and grips off.

After you have the grip all removed take some medium grit sand paper and lightly hit the surface of the bars where the grips go. Just sand enough to be sure all the old stuff is gone. Now for the fun part. If you have an air compressor grip installation is a breeze. Start one grip on the bars. Next take your air sprayer nozzle and stick it in the end of one grip. Put your other hand over the end of the bar on the other side. Hold this hand tight over the bar end. Now shoot the air into the first grip and it will swell up and slide right on. After you get the first one on start the second one on the other side of the bars. Insert the air nozzle in this grip and put you hand over the end of the one you just installed. Now blow the air into the second grip and push it on. Now I personally prefer to use a little safety wire to hold my grips on, but it is not a must do thing. If you notice your grips move you can either twist a little safety wire on them or you can glue them on. If you put a little glue on the bars before you install the grips, this will help that problem out. You can still install the grips using the air hose method with the glue.

Good luck and ride safe!

When i replaced my grips i filled the grips with hot water then put them on. Once the water had dried the grips are tight as can be on the bars. I wouldn't recommend riding untill the grips are dried all the way. My dad had suggested doing it this way and im very pleased with the outcome.

Oh, i forgot to add in here that i almost killed myself because of the water idea. I put my grips on and didn't let them dry before i went out for a little ride. I went sliding around a corner and the next thing i knew i was no longer holding on to the handle bars but just holding the handgrip and my quad had came to a abrupt stop. However after the water had dried out every thing stayed on nice and tight.

i have renthel bars and my new grips just slid on with just a little elbow grease. They went on really easy. Aluminum bars usually are easy but steel bars are hard ive done steel before it sucks.

I use some of the cloth type athletic tape on the bar where the grip will go. I then spray inside the grip with carb cleaner and slide it right on. Wait about 15 seconds and go ride. The carb. cleaner evaporates and leaves the grips stuck like glue.
