By going in on the air screw you are making it lean. Basically if you screw it all the way in then come out 2 turns you are at stock. As in if you are running a 280 main jet 2 turns out you are running a 280. If you go in 1 turn you are going down 1 jet size. If you go out 1 turn you are going up 1 jet size. If you have to go more than 1 turn away from 2 turns out you should change your main jet

Hope that helps

not to hijack his thread but I always kinda wondered about some of this too.

I'm running 270s on my shee now. Runs pretty good, but I always wondered how she would run if if jet her a little richer... If I wanted to try 280 (one size) without having to pull the carbs and everything, I could just let the screw out one turn to go up one size? Obviously if I wanted it permanent I'd just change the mains. But does it have the same effect?

Sorry but that seem totally wrong to me, I have always been told an airscrew effected nothing over 1/4 throttle and seems that way when change it. After all how could it effect a main jet, when the slide is open the carb pulls fuel strait through the jet and air strait from the back. I have also always used an airscrew the other way on rich verses lean, in equals less air with the slide down so that equals richer mixture, open more equals more air so leaner. Thats just the way I have always done it and anyone I have talked to jetting about used it in that fashion as well.

if your talking about slide height, then aren't you talking about the "idle screw" not the "airscrew"? The idlescrew is what adjusts the slide height (And therfore the idle).
