Default trx500r project

finally borrowed a digital camera, so heres my project, everything is going smoothly on it, except im having truoble gettin a CDI for it so i havent been able to start the engine yet.

frame: 1987 trx250x
motor: 1984 cr500

the swing arm and axel are off a 1986 250r, the swingarm is 3 inches longer then the 250x and the axle is 6 inches wider, I figured it would probably be a good idea to stretch out the rear end a bit

the air breather is going to be tricky to fit in there, not much room, not sure what im going to do about that yet.

leave any questions and ill be sure to get back as soon as possible

that thing looks pretty awesome. nice job. looks like though you might need to brace the frame up where you cut it for the pipe to fit. what kind of riding do you plan on doing with it? maybe hill climbs or drags? hate to say it, but more than likely its gonna vibrate your ass off no doubt about it. hope it runs good for ya when its all finished

yeah i havent quite finished the exhaust so i have to wait to re-brace the frame where i cut it, i dont know what type of riding i plan to do with this, probably just rip around on trails and pits. i bassically just bulit it so i can fly by all my friends on their 4 strokes. everybodys says i may have a problem with vibriation, hopefully is not to extreme, loc-tite and duble nut everything maybe. for an airbreather i just mean the cone part, i dont plan to run a box on it, theres only about 2.5 inches from the back of the carb to the frame, so im going to have to rig something up or find a flat aircleaner, if those are made.

Nice work. Gives me flashbacks of my project. Keep us posted on how it turns out.

Very nice. I'd like to do something like this with one of my extra X frames. Keep the pics coming in of the progress.

well I took the quad for the first drive yesterday, and started it for the first time, runs excellent, im using a 1985 cdi(liqiud cooled) CDI on an 1984 cr500(air cooled)
engine and i didnt know if it would work, but it does. it ran excellent, that engine is a tank and has a very usable power band. the wheeler wont even try to catwalk when you gas it, just sideways and burns the tires off it, BUTTTTTTT........ i can't give it more then half throttle because of serouis viberation, i had no i dea it would shake that bad, you litterally cant hang on to the bars, and its even hard on the feet. it rattled bolts (lock washer, and double nutted) lose in a matter of a few minutes.... so im going to try to incorparate some rubber into the mounts and try to put anti vibe crap all over it, wicked machine to drive, but useless untill i fix the vibe.

well I tightened up the mounts, mounted the exhaust using rubber, put some rubber on the handle bars, and started it up.. Huge differnece, hardly any vibe problem at all now, its still there but not enough to cause a problem. I made a air cleaner assmebly for it, it doesnt run as good with it on though, ill have to adjust the carb next time, its not gettin enough air, too rich and its smoking more. I made the assmebly out of the air hose off a V8 Ford F150 (the cr500 has the same sized intake as the truck haha) and i have a k&N air cleaner, it has stock jets in the carb right now should I go up a size of two????

is it ok to drive a 2stroke with out the packing or back on the silencer??

I was burning around the feild with it, hit a bump , the rear tires came off the ground and the chain slipped off and put a little hole though the case its not serious, and i patched it, but i think im going to stop driving it untill i get every thing that i need for it...

well, nobody has clocked me yet, i did some math and if the engine was running at 7500 RPM then i would be going about 143 KPH in 5th gear,,,,,,,its has an amazingly tall first gear though, about 50-60 with out shifting. I havent took it for a good test drive on an open road yet though....
