Hate to rain on the parade here, but i would steer clear of yz490's as much as i can. I owned an 83 YZ490 and could not change plugs in it fast enough. I am not the only one who feels this way. Go to offroad.com and ask one of the older editors how they feel about them. When I got it, it had a DG pipe and silencer on it. Mine had absolutley no bottem or mid range (i mean none at all, a 125 is stronger), but about the last 1700 rpm of the top end, it will rip your arms off, it absolutly scared the piss out of me the first time it happened. It brought it up in 4th doing like 55. I don't know if this was cause the DG pipe ir what... Just thought i would help someone, that damn bike caused me a lot of headaches, and it sucked gas like it was going out of style.

hmm never heard tath kind of stuff bout 490's but then agian i didnlt even know they eisted til bout 4 months ago. somebody on here has a yz490 in a old suzuki 4 poke chassis. or maybe it's a YZ465. one of the two but they are very very similar i tihnk the same cases even. and it runs great for them. you sure your just wasn't set up very well or something?? bad jetting maybe that what it sounds liek to me if it ate up plugs and had no bottom end and arm ripping top end. sounds like maybe a bit to much needle or maybe to high of a pilot jet

http://www.georgiaoffroad.com/dirtbi...?model=83yz490 http://www.off-road.com/dirtbike/columns/dntask/ There's a few more opinions. The one thing I did love about it was the sound of it, best sounding bike i have ever heard.

I agree with Hondaguy.I had a 87' Yz490,Biggest POS I've ever owned. It rattled itself apart regularly and had an even narrower powerband than a stock Banshee, but hit 10x as hard.It fouled plugs like a mother and it ran hot as sh*t on the trail.Once it got hot,the pinging would start. The only cure was to run race gas.It was expensive to run,but it stopped it from pinging. The biggest problem with those old 490's is the fact that their aircooled.Very hard to tune and jet. If your looking for a good engine for a swap,go with a YZ250,I know a guy who put one in a Warrior and it outruns stock banshees. They are plentiful and have a good aftermarket of parts. Its getting harder and harder to find those old aircooled parts.

I Put a yz465 5 spreed in my lt230 that thing screems and only whighs bout 310lbs. Having truble with fiting the rear plastics round the kick starter but it halls cant even use 5th till i get the tires balanced gets speed wobles. get tired of holding on after a wile. that thing has a narly power band.

I had an '83 yz490, 1 overbore, DG pipe and that bike had power from idle to topend. I could idle in 4th gear and grab a bunch of throttle and roost away. It did have a half worn tire. Mine too fouled plugs like crazy, also drank gas. I think someone with a lot of experience with jetting could've fixed that. I will put one in my LT250 if I find a deal someday. YZ490 was produced until about '89 i believe.
