Default need help with a JR80 asap

wellp...i'm back from the dark side.
I'm still ridin a 4 stroke...my son however is not anymore. picked up an 01 JR80 today..bought it for 375 bucks.
guy said it would start, but wouldnt stay running...start/die/start/die
got it home and took the carb apart and gave it a good cleaning. still wouldnt stay running. came up with the grand idea to shake the hell out of it while it was running...and it would say running. i guess the needle valve was sticking. took care of that problem.
anywho...he had bought it for his son a couple years ago..and his kid never rode it much. but he did however have his hands on it. he gutted the silencer, and took the stock airbox off and put some knockoff k&n clamp on filter on it. so i know the jetting is off...still has stock jets in it. after messing with the air screw and idle screw a while i finaly got it to stay running pretty good....has gobs of power for a little 80 smoker imo.
here are my questions

the air screw should be 1.5-2 turns out...it only stays running if i have it 3/4 turn out but has TERRBLE low end. like its pretty much non existant. at idle i can crack the throttle and it peaks right out, under a load..if its not screaming...it wont even pull me and dies. at 3/4 turn out, the rev hangs forever. its driving me nuts. I have a stock airbox and everything for that ordered....also have the silencer guts and packing ordered.

how cn i tell if the oil injector is working or not? i pulled the tube off and didnt see any oil in it...but i know that not the best way to tell. can i just unhook the carb line and cap it off...or do i need to get some kind of eliminator kit for it to run premix? what would be the best ratio to run?

i'm assuming the only way to tame this thing down a little is to cork it all back up lik stock again...my 9 yr old rode it for about 20 seconds today and when it hit the powerband...it took off like a rocket and he took out our chainlink fence head on. he didnt get hurt...just scared the bajeezus out of him.
