Default Unanswered: 1984 RM250 Help!

I just acquired an '84 RM250 in decent shape for its age. It's obviously lived a long life but I want to clean it up and make something really nice out of it. I don't know the general consensus on these bikes, but I want constructive advice here; no "that's a piece of crap! Get a (insert other bike here)!" or anything like that, please. It's what have to work with, and I know many of you really know your stuff, so please help me!

I've torn it down to the frame. Other than a few incorrect fasteners and a lot of mud that never got cleaned out, there's nothing too messed up here. The compression was very low (like 45-55 p.s.i. low) so it wouldn't kick start, but I did manage to pull-start it.

Here are my big questions:
The piston does not have any overbore numbers on it. I have not measured it yet, but I will borrow the tools to do so soon.
*Is this the stock piston in the stock bore?! The piston says "JAPAN" on the underside of the skirt, and there is an arrow on the dome, but no ".030" or anything like that. Could this have possibly made it this long on one piston?

*What other years share parts? I have some trouble looking for a high-output stator for this bike and I wonder if there's a good source for interchange info. out there. Anybody?

*Does anyone offer a complete bolt kit for this as they do for a lot of newer bikes? That would be nice to find.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me! I have been hitting wall after wall looking for answers.

well i would say thats the stock piston so get .10 or .20 size piston. A high output stator is gonna be hard to find i think so i would just get a stock one. about the bolt kit, you wil just have to get a universal one. i dont really think they make one specifically for that bike.

But the stock stator won't keep up with a headlight, taillight, and turn indicators, will it? Oh, and a horn. (Stupid Ohio laws...)
I should have specified more on that one.

ok first of all sounds like a sweet bike id like to see some pics ....second i would try ricky stator or maybe dennis kirk, maybe ebay or bikeboneyard.com if ur lucky for a high output stator , yes that sounds like a stock piston u would be surprised how long a bike can go on a stock piston if its a well taken care of motor ...show us some pics of the bore if ur lucky u may be able to get away with a hone and rings if not wiseco will have an overbore replacement for ya

I found a stator through Ricky Stator for an '86-'93. Did anything change between '84 and '86? Will this one work for me?

This is what I found. I saw what you were talking about. Looks the same across those years. Does this six-pole have the output needed for all the lights I want?
