Default Polishing an older pipe

I have an FMF pipe and have some pitting on the header pipe and the pipe it's self. Has anyone polished a pipe in this condition or is it a waste of time? I'm not lookin for show quality(since I ride hard). It's an 86 trx250r. I started using some wd-40 and a scotch brite pad. Also can I re-polish this with a buffing wheel if its smoothed back out?

1st of all, don't use the scotch brite if you're trying to regain any type of chrome appearance. That stuff scratches chrome real easy. Use SOS and a lot of it. Even so, you'll likely never get it to look anything like chrome again once it starts rusting. About the best you're going to get is to clean it up as best you can and then use a chromish exhaust paint on the worst part (likely up near the cylinder?) That'll at least slow the rust down.

I would say fine steel wool and some Mother's chrome polish, but once the pipe starts pitting, it's hard to make it look good

It's way to pitted for the SOS pads. I'll use a fine sanding disc and redo the pipe to my liking. I'll post some pics(hopefully next week) for yall's approval. Thanks for the info!!
