i just made that reccomendation cause when your learning you tend to be hard on bikes if you, you can beat the dog shit out of an xr and then sell it, if you've ridden before i'd say get a 125

If you want a 2-stroke, I would recommend a 125. They are plenty powerful and lighter than a 250. I can do almost everything on a 125 that I can do on a 250 except triples right out of a turn or something. And I don't think your going to be doing that anytime soon. I think that a four stroke is more suitable for a beginner though. Their power is much more manageable and requires less clutch use. Maybe something along the lines of a CRF230. It is air cooled and way less maintenence.
I am 16, and I just got my first bike maybe 2 weeks ago, its a Suzuki Rm 250. At first I thought I was stupid and that it would be to much for me but since I got a deal on it I figured what the hell. Honestly, within an hour of riding, I relized that it was a good choice and that the bike, though it has mad power, is fine as long as I know my boundarys and respect it. I say instead of getting a smaller bike and working you're way up to a 250 you should just go get a 250.

dont know what your looking for but i would recomend a 4 stroke 200 or 250 to start with or a 85. but the 85 will become boring soon. i have had 125 and 250 2 strokes. i have been riding the 250's since i was small enought that i had to have some1 grab the bike as i stop so i wouldnt fall over. but then again the 125's usally sit just as high. If you feel confindent enough in your skills and you dont do stupid stuff then you might go for a cheaper early 90s 250 thats in good shape. if not a xr200 might be the better way to go. or atleast a 4 stroke tell you get better.

Start out with a 125 2 stroke and you'll be fine. When you feel the need to go faster then sell it and go up to a 250. They're easy to maintain also.

the only thing you have to watch on a 125 is the on/off powerband, that can get you in trouble if you dont watch it. a 250 2 stroke has alot more linear of a power delivery, but for a first bike you will be getting yourself in over your head powerwise......

my first bike was a '80 yz125.. now i'm riding a 2000 and '06 yz250.. and i can tell ya.. i got bored of the 125's quick.. yeah there hell of a lot of fun on an mx track or a closed circuit corse of some sort.. but they're not all that fast.. a 250 yeah for a beginner seems like a big bike.. lots of usable power.. what people forget is you don't have to use it all at once... i would recomend a 250 to anyone... the 125's (unless piped and geared properly) seem to rap out way too fast.. and you have very little for top end... (that you can hold or maintain for like fire road riding)

and when going vertically i notice a huge difference.. my friend matt owns a '02 yz125 and we go to his hill we call oxide.. it's massive to say the least. and where i notice the big difference is i can start 10' from the base and still have enough power to make it up.. he starts from 30' back and can only make it half way... i can make it in 3 gears he can't even do it in 5... 250's offer more for later on riding.. hell yeah i wouldn't disagree with anyone that 250's are scary fast especially for a rookie rider, but later on it'll pay off...

I have a built 92 kx125 and my friend has a WAY built 96 kx250, that 250 is freakin SCARY fast, there is no need for anything with that much power being in the hands of a beginner, the 125 is just fun to ride all around, plenty of power and very light and nimble.

the 125 has boysen reeds, bored out .20 with a wiseco pro-lite, FMF fatty with a turbine core, uni filter and some mystery guru tuning that my friend did......get a 125 and just build it as your experience and budget allows.

I think that you should go with the 250 considering you already know how to shift and everything. i think you will get bored with the power of a 125, i doubt that will happen with a 250. you will be fine with a 250 as long as you know your limits and you have throttle control.

I Still say get whatever bike you find that i for sale and it's a good deal. I dont have to worry about being on the pipe or not because i never go on a track....yet. Hell, if you get a 125 for cheap, once you get tired of it, sell it and get a 250.

I'll have to look into that. Mine has a mod-top end pipe and i wouldnt mind a little more speed. I have 6 gears so im sure that's better for just playing around than 5. i'll have to make a thread about this for some guided advice.

and what is fire road riding?
