| Pputting it between the head and reed cage gives it slightly more botton end while on the other hand putting it between the reed cage and the carb manifold gives it more top end.

| they are also pretty handy for making everything fit up easier, like I've heard people say they use em to help to clear the clutch arm with the carb, or make a tighter squeeze in between the air boot or something. |

you are mostly correct .this doesnt work on all engines though .most people think it is too draw the reeds back away fro mthe cylinder to better aim the incoming charge and increase the intake area ,but by doing it you decrease incoming intake velocity.to get technical its not to better shoot atomized fuel into the upper boost port your transfers aid this pushing pulling fuel consuming effect on the down stroke ,the theory behind them(reed spacers) is alot more complex then to just better aim at the boost upper transfer port. larger volume expansion chambered and /or modified machines create more of a push pull effect of pulse waves through your motor this must be equal on intake side for maximum effeciancy... reed spacers pull back reed intake which lowers crankcase compression (not static compression) this equals out the natural push pull sonic pulse effect and puts broader powerband hit near the midrange of its rpm, which is where a 2 stroke makes most of its power ,this is why its more noticable on modified machines with higher rpm (higher exhaust timing)aftermarket exhaust systems and on ported cylinders.some engines have plenty of intake area and when properly tuned they dont require this mod ,it is a small difference in power usually. ready to fall asleep yet after reading this ? __________________

So would an engine with just a milled head benefit?

wel l it wouldnt really amount to much ,theres a lot of factors but a higher static compression would draw fuel through the intake at a higher/faster rate which may make bigger crankcase volume numbers more useful ,it (spacers) wont do a whole lot really on most setups and are more for fine tweaking and experimenting .
