Default 2 stroke oil for break in

Hey guys, I've been skimming the threads but still have a question. I have a 98 Polaris Scrambler 400 4X4. I recently had the cylinder bored, head milled and bought a Wiseco piston and rings for it. After installing everything I used a pre mix of 40-1 Amsoil HP Injector oil. After other problems I've had with this quad I had forgotten that the HP Injector was synthetic. Well, it is 50-1 on the bottle and I ran it 40-1 per the Haynes manual (yeah, I know but they don't make a 98 Scrambler manual) So far I have only run about a half tank on it with about 5 heat cycles and a few short stabs on the throttle. I have varied the rpms without too much load on it. My questions (finally) is this. Am I going to have to take it apart and re-hone the cylinder because of the possibility of glazing on the cylinder walls? Could I just run a half tank or so of dino two stroke mix to fix the possible problem? Everything so far seems fine but I don't have enough seat time on this thing to tell.

One last thing, if and when this thing is broken in, is it okay to use Amsoil HP Inj 50-1 pre mix?

Thanks for the replies. If you can't tell this is my first 2 stroke rebuild.

Forgot to mention, compression is 150 (after about 8-10 strokes)

40:1 is too lean on a break in tank of gas, IMO. I'd have run 25:1, then 40:1....as far as a re-hone, I don't know.......

Ah, my luck shines again.....I got 40-1 from the Haynes manual and a local engine guy. No the pump had been bypassed before I got it. I am just using pre-mix. My plug is already fowling out so I was thinking it was okay. (kinda)

MX 86, do you know where I could get one? I called a couple of local Polaris dealerships and they told me they may be able to get one but it would take a couple of weeks and close to $100. One of the places mentioned that when it shows two weeks or more for an order on a manual they may not have one for it due to it being a change over year? Mis-information? The only one I have been able to locate is the Haynes and it is really vague.

What should I do as far as the oil, oil mix and break in? I feel like if there is any damage to the rings/cylinder it is too late. Min compression in the manual says 115 and mine is at 150 but then again the head had to be shaved .025 so I am not real sure what is good and what is great. Thanks for the replies.

polaris makes a large manual that covers all quads for that year. if ya need a particular part let me know i'll scan it in for ya. we own 3 scramblers 1 98 (just sold) and 2 99's.

and i'd run a semi synthetic oil for the first couple tanks at 24:1 or 32:1 depending on weather conditions. plugs are cheap compared to a new engine

MX 86, I wish I would have gotten a hold of you earlier (about $1200 earlier) as I bought this thing not running. I was told it had about $1500 in engine work alone in it. So far I have replaced or fixed the following....

Stator (wrong one was on it)
Flywheel (wrong one was on it)
CDI (twice, at first I had no fire, now it will not shut off with the key or kill switch)
Water pump bearing, seals and gaskets
O-ring on crank spacer
Crank bearing, crank gasket and new seal
Strange looking nut that tightens up crank assembly
4wd Hub seals and two inner bearings ( I guess fortunate there wasn't more)
Head had to be milled .025 (previous damage that wasn't fixed)
Cylinder bored and new Wiseco piston rings and top end gaskets
Front master cylinder
Rear master cylinder
Rear caliper rebuild kit (doing as I type)
Head sensor (over heat switch...it's on order)
Key switch
upper clutch assembly cooling piece
Homemade lower intake cooling hose for clutch
Fuel/oil filter and new fuel hose
Nuts and bolts for various parts..( clutch cover, recoil housing,on and on...)
Battery
Pos and neg battery cable
Springs for exhaust..
Differential fluid, tranny fluid, and hub fluid

I know there is more I have done but to follow this up I still need

Seat..the plastic on ours is cracked up to bad to reuse
Chain and sprockets
Front brake pads
Ah I give up....

This is why I am paranoid about the oil mixture and what type of oil to use. I really do not want to take it apart for a while.

I know I have asked but after I run another tank of whatever oil mixture through it will running the HP Injector Amsoil at the (said on bottle) 50-1 be okay? It seems others are using a different mixture. I though what was on the bottle is what you mix it at.

Thanks for listening, this is better therapy than pushing this thing in the front yard and teaching my kids gun control by putting a few 30-30 rounds in it!

we have ours set (on the pump) at 40:1... the HP injector oil is amazing! only thing i will run in my sled or quads... so far on our scramblers we just bored them out .10 (could have gotten by w/ oversized rings but meh..) and 1 starter, 1 voltage regulator thing that is by the battery. and a radiator fan.

i would recomend replacing all the fluids especially the counterbalancer 10oz of 10w-30 it is located right under the airbox if you havn't done it. drain plug is under the bash plate. if ya need the diagram i'll scan it. also replace the hub fluid, 4 wheel drive fluid both in the transfer case in teh front (were it splits to the wheels) and the fluid behind the cover by the rear brake pedel.

oh btw here's our http://photos.everything2stroke.com/...ry.php?cat=542

Ah, I knew I forgot something...the starter and starter soleinoid (sp). Well, I have already replaced all the fluids and used 10w-30 in the gearcase. I had to change it because if the water pump. Full of water, why Polaris decided to put the waterpump in the gearcase I will never know. Well, I might get to see how this thing runs this weekend..The problem is it will probably be raining and will definately be muddy. it is real hard to stay under full throttle when mudding, Hmmm, I may just say the hell with it and call it good. What compression are your quads running?
