Default no power at low revs . . . . . help

OK I'll put my hands up right from the start and admit I know just about bugger all about 2 strokes, having ridden 4 strokes for years this is my first venture into your world so please be gentle with me and keep it simple.

I've bought a DT 125 r it's the water cooled version with power valve.

At anything below 5000 revs it has no power at all making a deep throaty noise, and when it hits 5000 I'm off like a rocket.

Now I know these things have power bands but this is more than just that as it struggles to get anywhere at low revs.

Please, please help me out here

cheers

Sounds like it could be a fuel related problem mabye it's to rich,I don't know what the mixing ratio is on that bike,or maybe it's oil injected not sure, what I would try is drain the gas out thats in it,get some new gas and mix it a little liener (less oil),if you have to mix it,if it's oil injected I would check your carb out could be that the float is stuck open,Basically what it sounds like is the bike just getting way to much fuel, try that tell us what happens

make sure your air filter is as clean as it can be and tear down the carb and clean it out. make sure to note what size jet's you have in it for referance later. check for air leaks. put a new plug in it and see if it's white or dark brown and wet. if everything is clean and there are no air leaks you should be able to check the plug to give you an idea of what way to go with the jetting...

Default thanks

thanks you all for your advice

I've got a workshop manual on the way which should give me all the settings I need, so once I've got it I'll check out everything that's been said and come back here to let you know what happens.

cheers again and safe riding

this is a long shot i don't know but i noticed when my 250r air filter got wet it did that exact thing so i'm thinking its getting way to much gas, if that happens it will cover the air filter with gas

An air filter covered in fuel (on a 2-stroke) is usually indicative of bad reeds.

Your air filter is a prime candidate. If bad or missing it will respond like you're describing. Also take a look at your air-screw.

Ok at long last I found some time and got my hands dirty

The reeds are fine, undamaged and correctly set

the floats needed a little adjustment but otherwise fine and the carb was clean and all jets etc set right

the air filter is just a piece of dry sponge in the airbox, I assume thats not right so will source the correct item as soon as poss and am I right in thinking the filter needs to be soaked in an air filter oil ?

thanks for your help so far and please do keep thinking of ideas for me, will let you know what happens with filter

cheers

they make things called air filters, get one and get some oil and cleaner for it and take care of it good. some times people overlook the smallest but most important things.
especially if u ride in alot of dust and stuff, i have a k&n and clean mine after every ride, its very dust and stuffd where we ride usually though, but even so, keeping your air filter clean is important, u do not want dust/coal/ect inyour motor and carbs
