Default 450r to 250r conversion

i was looking at the swing arm on a 450r and it looks quite similar to the 250r swing arm. has any body tried it out? i'm talking about the 86 250r which has a longer swing arm and has the rear motor mounts attached to the swing arm.

There are a half dozen or so guys over at 3WW that have done this with their trikes. I myself have an 08 takeoff waiting in the wings for installation on my 86ATCR. It takes very little modding and depends heavily on which shock you want to run etc. You can either go with the whole damn thing (arm, carrier, brakes, shock, axle, linkage) or you can just run the arm with the rest being 250r components. No one has seen fit to post up a complete write-up of how they did it, but I intend to just as soon as I am able to do it.

Myself, I will be running the following setup:

08 TRX450R swingarm with pivot dustcaps
86 ATC250R shock, bearing carrier, axle, brakes, forward motor mount bracket, pivot bearing bushings, shock linkage wishbone and durablue lowering link.

I have heard that the stock 250 linkage will rub the arm at full extension and also raise the ride height from stock, hence the DuraBlue lowering link. I also know that you will have to fab a thin (heavy 1/8") spacer to go on the carrier on the brake side to space properly for the stay becaus the 450 arm is slightly narrower than the 250 arm at the carrier end.

Also, keep in mind that the 04/05 arm is 1" shorter than stock 85/87 TRX/ATC while the 06/08 is damn near a perfect match.

I guess I could go on for quite some time about this as I have done extensive research into it and gathered tips and tricks from many people, but I think I covered the basics pretty well. If anyone has any specific ? about the whole deal, please feel free to PM me.

Later all,

T

Isnt the 400ex swingarm closer to the 250r than the 450?

Nope...that one and the 300ex seem to work better for 350/200x type usage.

The 400ex and 04 450r swingarms are almost identical besides the carriers carrier housing. The 250r and 400ex bearing carriers are longer than the 450r
