Question Polishing pipes

What's the best stuff to use for pipe cleaning/ polishing? Mine aren't that old, but are tarnishing(?) around the middle, and slightly blueing by the jugs.

dont make the common mistake of using an abrasive brillo pad ... use only fine steel wool and gas or kerosene to get the black burnt oily shit off of them . to get them to gleam use mothers polish and a clean terry cloth, finish off with lime green 2000 protectant spray .

The blueing can be removed with a special blueing remover... I don't remember where to get it. I know that doesn't help much, but I'm sure someone else may be able to chime in.

As far as the tarnish, there are several types of Chrome, aluminum and other polishes that will remove the tarnish. Most can be found at any hardware or automotive supply store. A little polish and some elbow grease should do the job... You probably wont even nead an abrasive pad or anything if you get the right stuff.

the blueing is something that you just may have to deal with. But to keep anything shinny I use NeverDull. There are other brands that make a little better shine, but the Never Dull lasts for a long time. I use it on everything I polish as my final step. I am sure that someone will know what to do about the blueing. But I do know that the better the finish on the pipes the less color change you get. (from my own personal experiance)

Yeah... even if you can somehow remove the blueing, it will no doubt come back when they heat up. That's just the nature of chrome pipes! The only way to reduce future blueing is to run the jetting a little richer, so the engine runs cooler (that's assuming you can clean it up using that special compound), however you may loose a little performance and risk fouling plugs more often. You may just have to deal with it if you don't want to do that!

the blueing is cause by heat transfer near the motor ,this often means a lean condition but some pipes like t5's will blue really easy compared to others, to stop blueing get some ceramic hi temp clear spray paint at your local auto store and spra y the INSIDE of your pipes near area where it meets the jugs. this keeps the temps lower and wards off the"blues"

Yeah, I know from experience!! But since it's not a show ATV, I'm not all that worried about it. It's jetted correctly... it's just kinda goes with the territory!

to really make your old pipes shine use a buffing wheel. stick that thing on your bench grinder and go to town. i use the jewlers buffing compound and it made my ebay fattys look better then new. mothers or any of that kinda stuff will do an ok job on aluminum that has allredy been polished, but for chrome your need the big gun.
