FMF Fatty Pipe 1987-89 Conversion to 1986

I am looking to purchase a FMF Fatty Pipe for my 1986 TRX250R. I've found a good deal on one that used to be on a 1987 250R. I know that there is two differnt types of FMF Fatty Pipes out there for the R, the model for the 1986 R, and then the model for the 1987-89 R's. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two? If the 1987-89 model pipe will work on a 1986 model R? If so, what has to be done to make it work? Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I am no expert but, I would assume since the 86-and 87 frames are the same and all the year 250r motor have the same mounting POSITION, then I would imagine that the pipes are to a degree interchangeable. I could be wrong???
However there may be a difference in pipe chamber design from the 86 to 87 because of the change from an 86 short rod engine to an 87 long rod engine.....
