some one posted a chart not to long ago with actual numbers....i think it was AJH....but the way it works is if you just take the front sprocket down a tooth each rpm is actually spinning the back that much further therefore giving you faster acceleration because the sprocket has less distance to travel....so lets say your stock sprocket carries you 10 inches (just an example not real numbers) on your tire per revolution.....take it it down a tooth and lets say it cuts out 2 inches of travel that adds those two inches to the travel of the tire....so instead of doing 10 inches per revolution you just did 12......go get your little brothers 10 speed out and put it on the largest front sprocket and smallest back and try going up a hill.....if your the hulk you might be able to do it and you will do it with a fast top speed.....if your not the hulk you won't be able to bare the weight.....it seems confusing but go watch a bike and you will understand it.
