questions about suspension

I have a few questions about shocks and suspension if anyone could help me. what is the difference between long travel and standard travel suspension? to use long travel shocks do you have to get certain a-arms or swingarm linkage thats made for the long travel, or would they just bolt up using the stock coponents.

I mostly ride trails and stuff. what would make my 250r handle better in the rough bumpy stuff, a better rear suspension or front suspension. I rode a 400ex with a axis rear shock and that thing rides amazingly smooth through the trails. its got alot of sag in the shock and it just soaks up the bumps like nothin and you can just fly through the trails. and one of our banshee's has front TCS shocks and they work awesome on the banshee when your flyin at top speed accross the rough stuff.

put plus 2 lonstars, triple rate shocks on front and have works or elkas revalve the rear
