How can you tell if your crank or bottom end is going out?

one way to check the connecting rod is the up and down play.your going to have some side to side play but should not have the other. you could also pull your side covers off and work your way in to the end of the crank on either side and check for play in your outer crank bearings, other than that you gotta split the cases. but once you go that far you might as well go ahead and rebuild it any way.

I getting ready to split my cases on my R when ever my bearings and seals come in the mail. on the stator side I think the crank bearing is wore out/going bad. I can hold the end of the crank and move it up an down quite a bit, i'd say it moves like a 1/32nd to 1/16th of an inch, which if you ask me sounds like alot. but my R runs very strong and the topend is still good, its just I dont want the thing to take a dump on me when Im runnin it balls out wide open somewhere. and plus its got a bad tranny oil leak, the case has a hair line crack in the back of the motor close to where the swingarm bolt is and while I got it split im going to jb weld the leak up.

and the other day I also noticed my frame cracked pretty bad again on the left side where the swingarm bolt goes......the very same spot as last time . but my welds didnt crack, it cracked just right above the welds almost all the way around the square tubeing.

Well I found out what the knocking was. The crank arm bearing seized up yesterday. And while splitting the cases I dropped the clutch basket and broke off a piece of it too! I guess it's a good time to upgrade to a hinson basket?

Yep, while your in there...just replace the crank and crank bearings. Also check out the tranny for chipped gears and if you got the loot to replace all the tranny bearings, do so.
Having a complete rebuilt bottom end will save you alot of head aches down the road.
