Default bunch of R questions

ok....so i bought my the way it is, so i dont know what has been done to it for sure....so i have some questions to try and figure it out...first off, its an 87..
what kind of frames did these have? steel or aluminum...
there is a mounting tab on the head that is not connected to anything. what was it for?
how long are the stock a-arms and shocks?
and finally how long is the stock swingarm?
thanks for any and all help!

Steel frame, the tab is for the head stay...which is the top motor mount that connects the motor to the top 2 frame rails. Not sure on the length of the stock a arms, but the shocks are 16'' and the 86 87 swinger is 1'' longer than the 88 89.

well the "head stay" isnt mounted to anything, nor is there anything to mount it to...why is that?

There's a small crossmember that bolts from upper framerail (under the gas tank) to upper framerail and provides a mount that the boss at the back of the head bolts to. Sounds like yours is missing.

I'm going to have my tank off sometime here in the next few days so I can take a picture if you want.

^^ Yep, what he said. You will want to pick up a head stay, not having one puts a lot of stress on the other motor mounts. They are usually all over ebay.
