This video shows what a 250r is capable of.

I personally dont think a yfz could compare. But, I really think it would be good to take a test drive of both and choose what suits you best.

The valves would need adjusting alot if you ran it real hard and making it ready for competition would take alot of money.

I would pick the 250r. Not cause its two stroke but because I think it would have better handling than the yfz and if you did the clutch just right I bet you could beat a 450 out of a turn.

And another thing, having a 250r would make you unique. How many people in your area race with a honda 250r. Here around memphis nobody has a trx250r.

On a track I've ridden 2 yfzs, 2 250rs, and an LTR450. They are completely different. All of them corner different, you just have to get used to whichever one. You have to sit back a little further on the yfz when jumping, but that doesn't take very long to get used to. The 250r feels much lighter in the air and a little lighter in the corners. To me, a ported 250r power band feels perfect for a track, but it is nice being a gear high in the corners on a four stroke. The four strokes are more forgiving, but the 250rs are just as capable.
It all depends on what you want. I prefer the 250r on the track, but that changes from rider to rider. There are a lot of other factors that go into it as well: cost, maintenance, originality, riding off the track, etc.
A full mx 250r will cost half as much as a 450. Maintenance will be cheap, but you will be constantly fixing little things due to the age. A 450 will need constant oil changes and occasional tune-ups, less time, but parts and fixes will be expensive.

Try to ride both and see what you like better.

Well i'hve rissen both yfz 450 and 250r,and ok i'm not a good MX rider.
But i have to admit 450s are much easier to ride because of their torque.
In France MX tracks are very sinuous and so,it's hard to ride in high revs...

But once again, riding a 250r gives you an uncommon style and everybody is looking at you when you give your first kicks starting your engine. First laughing then, showing respct!
