Talking cr250r

i am new here and kinds new on fixing bikes i just replaced my kickstart idle gear and in order to do that i had to remove the right crankcase cover anc clutch assembly but when i put it back together my water pump leaks out the weeping hole. is it possible i screwed something up or just bad timing for the water pump to go . before i did all this there was a whistling coming from that area and now it leaks possible that the hole was clogged with dirt and i knocked it loose doing the repair. if thats the cas i probably saved myself from overheating and killing the motor. is it the impeller i have to change or something else too your help would be appreciated!
