Default Carb ? for 83 250r

hey guys. first off i wanna say that im new to everything2stroke and this is by far the best site i've been apart of!!! everyone here ROCKS!!! anyway i have an 83'250r that has recently been taking .20 over and i have a full DG exhuast on it. I had my carb rejetted at the shop were my bike was rebuilt but it still doesnt run right. I was wondering if i could put an 85'-86' carb on to try and get some more outta the bike. havent done alot of research but was hoping someone here might have already done something similar. Thanks alot hopefully you guys can help! thanks..aaron!!!

Those things come with the most basic and undersized pos carbs ever, putting an 85/86 carb on would do wonders. But if you're not comfortable jeting even that thing you might have some problems.

Check that the float hieght is correct, as well as performing a leak-down test would be a smart move. Than from there, jet it yourself and right. There's plenty of info re: jetting on here.

I've been slowly working over my '84 R too, and I actually have an '85 carb sitting in a box waiting to get put on. I completely rebuilt the whole bike last year, all new bearings and a .060 over piston. I also did a little port work while I had her apart, newer CR 250 reed cage and power reeds and a few other things.

Up until today I have been running the stock (worn out ) carb and a DG pipe that came with the bike. The stock jetting was way rich in my case, had to drop a couple sizes on the pilot and main, and dropped the jet needle a slot. Still ran rich in the low to mid range, cleared up in the higher gears and rpm. Still can't figure out how thing could have run much without fouling plugs with the stock jetting, I know they jetted the air foolers rich from the factory to keep from overheating but I was fouling plugs like they were going out of style.

A while back I scored a CT custom racing pipe off fleebay for 18 bucks, finally swapped it on today. I can say just swapping pipes made a huge difference in my low end. The header pipe on the CT was visibly longer so I was hoping it would give me a boost in the low end. The DG seemed to have a real noticeable hit when it hit the powerband and not much low end. Do you have the stock pipe? If so how much of an improvement was the DG over stock?

Do you have a larger carb boot for the bigger carb? I'm going to try boiling my stocker and stretching it over the bigger carb. If that doesn't work I think the only other option is to get a carb boot from an odyssey 350. The l/c 250R boots won't work because they are set at an angle.

If you really want to make your air-cooled R fly, talk to 1upfront, he can smoke most new quads. Good luck.
