Default 250r problems

i am sure many people have asked this question but i just bought a 1986 250r and am having jetting problems, its bored 20 over stock, has reeds, ported, and has a fmf fatty exhaust with a turbine core 2 sliencer, the pilot is stock i think its a 48 and has a 150 main the needle clip is on three, fuel air screw is 2 out, ordered a new needle and have cleaned the carb more times than i can count, wont idle and it studders out in the top end, dont know much about r's so any suggestions on what size jets i need to run would be greatly appricated, thanks

It may be a tad lean with those mods and a stock carb, Try a 52 pilot and a 160 main and go down from there. My opion would be to just scrap that stock carb and pick up a 38pwk. I really wouldnt waste any money on fixing the small outdated oem carb. jmo

If you get the 38pwk Id start at 52 and 170 and go down from there

fulltilt is right. Start at 160 and go down. I went from a 160 to 158 and it made mine feel like a different bike. I also moved the clip to the middle position.

Another vote for the 38PWK A/S. That is one nice carb.
I didn't know how bad my stocker was until that thing went on.

Is it smoking pretty bad?If so you could be burning coolant,i have seen this before on a friends of mines bike,He was getting coolant in the bottomend, not the oil though.he changed the head gasket twice along with the base gaskets,it ended up being a warped spacer plate for the cylinder. An air leak will keep you from getting a good idle and jetting as well.worn out reeds will as well. That jetting sounds like it could be in the ballpark though.

i'm gonna hop on the band wagon. I think you'd be very happy with the 38 PWK a/s on it, and it would be more appropriate for what you've got done on it. It will help the performance, regardless.

oh and welcome to E2s!! Make sure you head into the intro forum and tell us the who, what and where!
