im probably wrong, but I recall reading somewhere that the older model, 88-90 etc., had more power in stock form compared to the mid and late 90's models. something about honda de-tuneing them to help moderate the powerband or something?

well i have had a few of these motors and bikes all 500's from factory are steel frame but the aluminum frame is just from service honda a dealer . i know your power years is the 85 86 motor i had an 85 and a 95 at the same time and the 85 would run off and leave the 95 but the 95 was eaiser to gear to a quad cause it had a different final drive ratio . Now i have a 2000 cr500 and it rides just like my 95 cr500 so u ask around like on the cr500riders.com ask them , but if its a cr500 its going to be fun and a handfull unless its wore out , thats my 2 cents

85 thru 87 were the best the 86 was the highest revving of them all with a different cdi box and a shorter rod as for a bad year for the cr 500 there are none!

they are really conservative in the porting ,the bridged exhaust allows for major improvment andstill have ring support ,these things can be a real brute on the pipe once ported
