Stator side down. I wouldnt use the splitter unless its needed. Just hit it around the seem with a rubber mallet. It should come apart. If you have to use the splitter, make sure everything is nice and even before you start cranking. Thats why I like the tusk splitter. It has all its fingers on the same plane. You can just mount the fingers flush on the cases.

I always put the clutch side down and the stator side up, make sure you get all the bolts out (if you get them all out it should come apart easily) and try to pull the left case off the crank. When putting it back together everything goes in the right case, when putting the main bearings in, put your cases in the sun and put the bearings in the freezer, (they almost drop in that way) wait til everything cools or warms to room temp. Then put the crank in the freezer and the cases in the sun (including bearings), when putting crank the crank seals in, dont put them in too far ( you will block of the oil flow to the main bearings), so i suggest putting the seals in before putting the top end on. then blowing air down the oil holes and making sure you did not block them off, you dont need to put them on that far, just enought so that they seal against the crank and the cases.

X2 on pulling the stator side off.

case splitter.. flat head screwdriver??? lol. i did a 86 a few weeks ago.. i found it easy.. wish it was set up more like the banshee you take the top off not the side.. but cant have everything..

1 more note.. Make sure you lable all your stuff.. also when putting it back together i had a issuse with one of the shifter pines.. they need to line up prefectly with the left side when sliding together.

I just spray them down with some carb cleaner and then give them a light coat of ATF. Here is a link you can read about doing the job at hand. Honda CRM250R Mark 2 Engine Rebuild Project - A detailed guide to rebuilding an off-road two-stroke single
