Default coil interchange?

I suspect a faulty coil on my 83' cr480. My question is can the coil be changed to a newer one? or a universal one? I got rid of my cr500 so I only have kawasaki coils laying around, could I use one of these for a test? or will something fry...

As long as the coil is of the same ohm range (1-2 or 4) you can try any coil you want. There are only those 2 basic types of OEM coils and no harm will incur from using any other coil of the same ohm range.

Thanks for the info. The manual I have doesnt give much for testing specs for this model.
