KX 80 ignition or carb prob

I have gotten a 1980 KX 80 to restore for my daughter. New jug, Wiseco ect installed. Carb cleaned, decent condition also. The bike starts and idles perfect but sputters and pops at mid range and never tops out. Removed flywheel and stator is good and clean. This bike is CDI and the coil wiring to the plug is not in good shape at all (loose and taped). Am I leaning in the right direction on focusing on ignition parts as being the problem or is it carburetion ?> I have cleaned the carb and adjusted the floats dozens of times and doesn't help.

yep I'd say youre leaning in the right direction, try to replace or atleast check the whole electrical system and take a look at the jets if you haven't already.This is how i solved the problem on my 74 gt80, i found out i had a bad coil.
