Default Welded peg...

Here's my dilema...for some reason that is beyond me, whoever had my T4 before me welded the left peg to the frame. Yeah. No bolts...just welded. First off, it worries me slightly that this may not be too strong, but I am 285lbs and I've been jumping it since I've had it. But the big problem is I would like some nerf bars, but they bolt on with the pegs...can anyone see anyway around this other than welding the bars on? And what is your take on how strong the welded peg is? It seems to be a good weld, and like I said...it hasn't dumped me yet.............knock on wood.

that is similar to when you buy a truck with a hitch that has been welded on....you really can't know. I would put a grinder to it and then beat the shit out of it. Then bolt the fucker on.

The problem is this.....most nerf bars are made out of aluminum.........and you can't weld aluminum to steel.

ture that....i don't think that even triying to weld the nerfs even if they were steel would be a good idea.....depending on the welder of course i would imagine it is stuck on there pretty tight.....take a steel brush and some fine steel wool and grind on the weld a little.....look for stress fractures or small cracks and stretches.....if you can see theses after polishing it up then you might have something to be worried about.....you could also pabricate some kind of reinforcement for peace of mind and for mounting the nerf bars.

They probably welded the pegs on because 1) the bolts that hold the pegs on are a very fine thread and hard to find in a high grade bolt, 2) they stripped the threads in the frame and didn't have the means to repair them.
You are prabably better off to leave it as is, If the weld looks strong and its held up well so far you are probably fine.

As for nerfs you can use almost any nerf bar that bolts to the pegs. There are tons of them out there so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a set. All you will have to do is drill a couple small holes in each peg to bolt the nerfs to. This gives you the option of running aluminum pegs which tend to be more desireable than steel.

I would leave it unless you really want nerf bars. How I would cut it off is to get a .045 cutoff wheel and put it on a 4.5" grinder. Just cut in the center of the weld length wise. Then hit it some then grind some more. But be carefull the cutting wheels are VERY vicious. To the tubing and your skin.......Its easy for me to say as I use them daily but that is what I would do if you wanted to remove it

More than likely if it was welded properly, the peg will break long before the weld will break. A common break is on either side of the weld, not usually down the center of the weld.

Follow Brians (bobeaser) directions for removal of the peg, that is it. +2 on being careful with a cutoff wheel. Respect it....
