Default Splitting the case

I am at the point where i am going to split the case, do i need to have a case splitter? all i am going to do in the case is change the main bearings. they don't need it but i want to put fresh ones in it.

After i am done do i need a hydralic press to put them back together?

I just got mine spit today for the first time. The advice I was given was that you could also use a puller (balencer, pulley). Worked for me and they are available at Autozone for cheaper then a real case splitter costs.
You might not need a press. I heated my cases and pushed the old bearings out with a socket. To install put your bearings in the freezer for 2 hours and heat your cases. They should go in...PB

I do it the same way as Paulie. I do have a press to get the old bearings out. I freeze both the bearings and crank for about 4 hours. I use a hand propane torch to heat the bearing races in the case halves and the bearings go right in. Then I use a brass fitting that sit's perfectly in the inner bearing race to heat it up. When the bearing race starts sweating I stop heating it, pull the crank from the freezer and the crank drops right into the bearing. Here is a link you can read up on the engine rebuilding process. It's for a Honda but they all go together the same way.

http://offwidth.co.uk/bike/crm_rebuild/index.html

Just make sure when you split the cases that any shim's that fall out go back on the gear shaft it fell from upon reinstall. Take your time and you might have to heat the front and rear of the cases where the mounting bolts go through as they will have corrosion and be very sticky.

I use a rubber mallet to split cases.. I have a steering wheel puller, but I haven't needed it yet... I also use the heat and freeze method for assembly... it works great... If you suspect the main bearings need replacement, you should definately change the seals too as Kawi's require splitting the cases unlike other bikes
