1st of all, shorting out is what the pick-up is DESIGNED to do. It creates a short which in turn signals the CDI to do it's thing. While your pick-up coil MAY have been BEAT to death, touching will not "short" it out. It will, however, "confuse" the pick-up and stop it from sending the signal. Before you go wasting money, test the pick-up to the manuals specs. Likely you just need to get those bearings replaced and get the proper spacing between the stator and pick-up, restoring the correct magnetic field.
