It got me thinking after my post, would it be better to not have a "case saver"\? If you were to get a thicker aftermarket one, then the weak spot would be the mounts. If you didnt have a "saver" there, and the mounts were still intact, a chain coming off might not harm the case.

Not sure if that makes any sense, just a thought

every engine i have seen has had the chain saver mounts broken off. luckily i can weld aluminum so its not a big deal. but it is def a downfall to theses quads.

I've got an '85 that's become my project. Big end of the con rod bearing went. Haven't tore it apart yet even. Any advice on this? Can you just replace the bearing, and does it have to be pressed in a out? Also any tips on crank removal would be appreciated. I have pics at myspace.com/ goodtimestex It was fast when it ran.

You need to let a machine shop do some of that work:
The crank need to be pressed apart & then repressed together with the new bearring.
Then the crank bearrings need to be pressed into the case, along with one side of the crank.
However, you can do some things like dissasembly.... you can to make the machine shop bill lower!!

About the Case Saver:
"Blaster250" You are correct when you say that the aluminum mounts are the weakest link. However if you didnt have the case saver in there & the chain hops off: I would believe that the chain would go straight thru the stator cover. The problem is that the case savers will break any way you have it......Just a bad design.
wether the case saver is on or off, the chain will just bunch up untill it has enough pressure to break them...

Its obviously a bad design. But it seems like ANY atv chain coming off would bunch up and break stuff . Maby it had something to do with people not keeping their chain tight. A loose chain could be caused by a broken swing arm (The other main problem) by the bearing carrier, causing the "cam" of the carrier to change.

However it happened, it was long ago, and happened to most everyone, so its hard to say.

Keep that chain tight!

it jsut amazes me how long these quads can survive so many years of abuse and still be one of the fastest produced quads out there to this day. simply amazing
