Exclamation help quick

im putting my 86 lt250r back together and my clymer manual says that there is a shim that goes in between the crank and the bearing. the bike didnt have one when i took it apart. i was wondering if anyone knows about them. the manual says it has to be matched to the crank. how do they match it?? could somebody please reply because i just need to know if i need it or not because if i dont i can put it all back together.
