Default backfiring?

I just bought an 85 LT250R from a guy that he had rebuilt. It has great compression, but it backfires and won't stay running? I cleaned the carb out good, and still the same...
What causes 2 strokes to backfire?
where can I find an online manual for this?
Thanks guys!

It sounds like a timing issue to me, You could have sheared a flywheel key.
I do not know of an online manual for these years lt250r. I would just buy one they come in handy...

You need to get a flywheel puller. They are like $15-$20.
