transmission? what do you think?

my transmission did not want go back in 1st gear the last couple times i went riding. And now it goes in 1st fine but when i shift in to 2nd gear it just grinds all the other gears work fine.I thought i needed a whole new transmission but a friend of mine said it was the shift fork.Busting the case in half the weekend curious what you think.
