Default carb jetting opinion w/41mm pwk..

hey alll.. good to see we're back up.. any way heres my situation, i need everyone's input on whats up..

i had the stock carb on my lt500 w/pipe/coolhead/reeds.. it started no problem.. 1-2 kicks cold, 1 kick hot.. no probs. i traditionally keep my lt500 jetted so it starts w/a little cracked throttle so that it helps de-compress the engine and make it easier when kicking..

i just recently upgraded to a 41mm pwk carb, and i've seen huge performance improvements.. only prob, now its a b^tch to start when ice-cold. Hot-start is really no prob.. 1, maybe 2, maybe 3 kicks.. but nothing to tough.

Cold starting is so bad, sometimes i need to pull start it, or throw some starter fluid in the spark plug hole.. and i'm an experienced zilla kickstarter, so i know its not my technique.

at first, i thought the carb was running too lean with the 41mm opening (getting too much air when cold.. maybe making it hard to start)?? but i checked the plug, and its kinda black, which means its running rich.. perhaps this combined with my liking to start the thing with a cracked throttle is making it too rich when trying to start it?

here's the only thing that makes me think tho that its NOT jetted to rich.. usually when the carb is too rich, or starting to get flooded on kickstarting, the zilla will start its kick-back/backfire routine which tends to rip your leg off.

when its hard starting cold, there is NO kickback and NO backfiring... ?

ok guys.. whats your ideas on my situation?.. oh yea, when ice-cold, one spray of starter fluid and its starting with a easy 1 kick.

thx guys.

well from what iv heard it still sounds like your a little bit lean, id go up on the pilot a couple sizes and then try it out. if it starts harder when warm than before it could be too lean, it doesnt hurt to try it.

I have a 41mm pwk and run a 55 idle jet. I turn the choke on and kick it real slow to get prime it. Turn the choke off and kick it over. Fires up 1 or 2 kicks when cold The trick is to kick it when it's at TDC then give it holy hell! -Mark
