Default Port timing

Can I use a degree wheel and a feelers gauge to figure out what my port timings are?And if not how do you do it?Also what degree is a fast timing and which is slow?Like say the exhaust opens at 188 would 190 be fast or slow?

stock an lt500 has approx. a 182 ex and 118 transfer . theres way more to making a motor fast than a few numbers . a porting spec is just that .for play racing a 192 ex should work good if yo u have a mid-topend pipe to match it . theres programs that pretty much make a degree wheel obselete nowadays.when you can see light to the edge of the piston to the given port is usually the way alot of people do it.

LOL.I'm not looking to change anything just thought since it was on the bench.I would see what the timings are.I haven't learned enough to do port work. But I think I gonna try port mapping and see if I can make sense of things. At this point I'm just looking to learn.

nothing wrong with that ,everybody had to start somewhere .thsi is a good opportunity to see first hand what state of tune your bike is actually in and make any improvments .i cant count how many times id tear a bike down just to tinker with it for the sake of trying to get a few more ponies out of her, thats whats so cool about a 2 stroke engine.. theres always some hidden power if you look hard enough

did gordon jennings publish another book ? am i missing one ? the only one i know of is the two-stroke tuners handbook & good luck finding one they were last printed in 1973 i think they had a blue cover or red cover mine is the red cover was printed in 1973 maybe the blue one was newer ???? that's why i found a link for him to a scanned book the last one i saw was at a rare book store & they wanted 250$ for it i think i paid 5$ for mine new anyway yes it's a very good book but my first choice would be bells book two stroke tuning they are still in print & i think a bit easier to read for the beginner & to understand but you should read both they come to different conclusions on some things like crank case stuffing

here is a link to bells book

no you are correct ... his book is old as youve stated, but its still very relevant and contains some really good info over the other tuners books .my humble opinion is i dont know why people think crank case stuffing is so critcal when theres plenty of dynos that prove it does little in producing added power gains ,this goes back to the rd400 GP days when they were trying to squeeze ever last bit of power out and didnt see much of any improvment by doing so .IMHO the manufacturers got it right in alot of ways even back in the 70's .just my 2 cents

LOL, the ONLY engine I've ever played with that benefited from crank stuffing is the 25/30CC Homelite weedwhacker engine.
