Default base gasket torque

replacing the base gasket on the 89 500 saterday and my ? is can i torque it over 3 ft pounds i got the manual but i keep on getting a leek through the base gasket any ideas

I had the same problem with my 250R, turns out it was the gasket that mates the cases. It was barely noticable, I only found it when I was removing the old base gasket with a sharp razor blade. As far as torque I dont see why a few pounds would hurt. Hope that helps.

The fix for this problem that I have found is cometic gasket will make a copper base gasket, I paid I think $20.00 for it to my door. Give them a call, I went through about 5 base gaskets in one riding season, once I put the copper gasket on I never had a problem, and as a bonus they are reusable.
