87' - 6 studs
88'-90' - 7 studs.

I believe the stock head gasket will work until your a 1mm overbore.

if you o-ring your head you don't have to worry about gasket size and its a better seal

You can use a stoke gasket if you want. I am using one on a 2.5mm oversixed bore and haven't had a problem yet. Also you sig is wrong, it should say .040 over not .40 over

The stock bore gasket is fine at 87mm. The gasket kits say what bore they are good for. BTW O-rings are not better than a quality gasket. If you want to improve on a quality gasket the only option is to use copper gaskets and metalic O-rings. The guy that suggested O-rings was suggesting to have your head cut to use plain rubber O-rings. This isn't a good idea, IMO. The rubber in a standard O-ring will not handle the heat well enough. Metalic O-rings do not seal well enough on their own, and require the use of a copper gasket. This type of setup, with metalic O-rings and copper gaskets will never be as water leak proof as a quality standard gasket, but they will perform better on a compression blow out. IMO a cometic head gasket, 3/8 NFT head studs, and an improved head squish clearance is the best setup for a stock to quasi built zilla. You really have to be pushing everything to the limits to need something better than that.
