I know the reeds and cages are different on the 87 from the 88-90 models but will the 88-90 cage fit the 87 cylinder?

no, the reed cages from a 88-90 will not fit a 87. different bolt pattern.

Actually, I knew the bolt pattern was different, but was wondering if it was the same size. I was going to make an adapter plate. But, I looked through my old gasket sets for my 90 LT and found that the cage is smaller as well as the different pattern.

tudors performance sells a adapter plate (87)though its the bastard year for them. on my 87 i ported the stock reed cage and manifold and ran boyseen carbon fiber pro series reeds (45$) and it made a world of differenc to my bike for sure.
