Rebiuld time Well,I decided to tear the zilla block down and it was a good thing I did. Seems the old crank had a gear-side runout of about .014ths and it basically trashed the counter-balancer and basketshaft bearings. Floppin like a bobble-head. The powervalve wasnt working either, I just hadnt really had reason to notice as I stay pretty low in the RPM's for the small pit I have been riding. I must suck at feeling vibration or something, this thing had to be vibrating but I didnt notice. Course, the iso mounts I used and the barsnake probably had a lot to do with it. I guess getting rid of vibration can be a bad thing too.
So, I'm going to do a bit of port-work on it while its apart. Got a spec-sheet from a friend at one of the known racing companies, nice to know people. I doubt I'll do too much porting to the powervalve chamber in the lower end as I don't feel like beefing the cases back up on the outside. Porting the lower chamber removes the meat and support behind the lower front motor mounts and this area needs to be reinforced if ported properly. I'll stick to mostly cylinder and head work. Not too drastic, just a basic improvement in all RPM's. Picked up a Lectron Powerjet 40mm with a huge assortment of jetting needles. A friend wanted a racing Mikuni 34mm I had and swapped me. Bought a set of rings too, even though the old ones were only a few hours old. My cases are already bushed so they don't need any work.
Got a new Suzuki basket and since Hinson seems to have dropped the ball on producing new ones I'll just run it for a few disk sets. Maybe I'll look into other companies. Dont remember the name of it right off, but I like that basket that has stainless buffer plates on the basket fingers. Never seen a hub wear out so I'll stick with the 18yr old unit I have.
Got my rod kit swapped out on the new crank I bought. I figured a stroker crank was just asking for trouble, so I installed a stock Suzuki rod. I'm going to rebuild the old crank as a spare. Hell, why not, it already had a new rod kit anyway so whats another $180 for the gearside half. Cheaper than the average new Zilla crank.
Thinking about milling the clutch cover to make a quickchange type like Hinson makes. Looked around but it seems no one makes one for the Zilla. Not a neccessary item, but they do look cool as hell. Got a big outward-facing dent with a developing crack in mine from the privous owners screw-ups anyway. If I screw it up, what have I lost as it needs replacing eventually anyway.
So, what have I left out? |
