Default 2nd Gear? Help Please

I have a '89 Zilla.

I went to the sand dunes over the weekend. When I was there my 2nd gear did not want to work right. If I keep it low on the R's it is okay but about haft throttle and up it slips out until I lower the R's back down then it grabs again.

Is this a regular accurance for a Zilla?

Is there anything I can check before I split the case?
If I split the case any ideas what it is? Shift Fork? Striped Gear?

Any advise would be great.

Thanks, Apher

Im not really good on this sorta thing, but it sounds like you striped a gear...if its happening in any of the other gears then it might be the clutch...but like I said Im not good on this sorta thing..Im sure that someone on here will be able to help you with what your having problems with.

Time to split the cases
What you are going to look for are bent or worn shift forks, bent shift fork shafts, worn dogs on the gears, worn shift drum, worn trans bearings. My old 500 used to pop out of 4th & needed 3rd 4th & 5th drive gears & a new fork.

2nd gear ussually goes. the dogs on the gear wear out. when you go to replace the gears make sure you buy both for a matching set.

Experienced the same thing. Definately a first-check item. But if it's tight, you'll be splitting the cases.
