Unhappy crank repair/truing

O.K. Iknow how to true a crank, its not hard. i can weld, so i can keep it true, I also have a press or 2 so i know i can get 'em apart(i've got a practice crank to learn with) what I don't get is how you align the centers to be exactly 180 out.
I see the indexing on the pin, but how you do know its right? Is there some kind of jig I can buy or make? or do you just put it on the index that looks closest and pray you get it right? I know if you get it off by 2 degrees the ignition timing will be way off, burning the motor down. SO HOW DO I DO IT? is there a machinist' trick i can use? I've talked this over with mechanics and machinists and got a lot of ideas, but nobody can come up with anything good besides making a jig, but that wont have tight enough tolerance to do the job right if it just slips onto the crank, and if it presses in, then you can't press the crank together fully.
SOMEBODY EDUCATE ME PLEASE!!!!

My friend was over the other day, and we were talkin over the shees and he asked me:
Why would you ever need a quad that can go 120 miles an hour, or a car that'll do 180?
I told him "If the answer ins't obvious, an explanation sure as hell won't help ya.

look i know yo u wanna save yourself some money and you like to do things on your own ... but take my advise as a Tool and die maker of 11 years and a part time engine builder ....throw it in the trash and get another one ,it isnt worth the hassle and they can be bought so cheaply due to the fact an aftermarket and/ or stroker crank is such a common modification banshee owners do .you will have more time and effort into fucking qround with a crank that is junk and cant be trusted than if yo u just took 100$ or so and bought a good used one already welded and trued .
