Default 2 stokers and flywheel games

I am trying to get my mind around flywheels, I trail ride, and been doing some reading on flywheels, some of the claims for heavy flywheels does not make sense. as I understand it, a heavy flywheel makes the engine rev more slugish, but helps keep from stalling at lower power , a lighter flywheel makes the engine rev zippier, but makes it easier to stall, the claims are that a heavy flywheel may actually increase the rate of acceleration and does not drop off the top end, while increaseing throttle responce and helping engine braking. This sounds like the cure for all your ills, but this does not wash with what I saw when road racing, light flywheels tend to increase rate of acceleration, heavy tend to slow it, light flywheels tend to engin brake better, but require you to be up in the Rpm while exiting a corner, in cars it is a ballance.

A lighter flywheel allows your motor to rev higher because of the lightened rotating mass. This will allow you to accelerate faster. There is a certain balance in ligthening the flywheel. If you lighten to much your motor will stall. So you can take off some weight but you don't want to take off to much. I am sure Evil can explain it better since he does lighten flywheels

changing the weight of the flywheel can change the idle...the lighter the flywheel the quicker it revs

I am actually wanting to go the other way, and make a little more 4 stroke like bottom end, but not wanting to mess up the over all performance, I notice KTM in general has heavier flywheels then others, som lamost insane heavier when you factor in the aftermarket availabler

I don't think it is going to give you bottom end as in torque it would just be sluggish to get to high RPM's. What kind of bike to you ride? There are other mods you can do to get low end torque

EvilTwin is getting my flywheel to lighten it for my banshee. Here is some things he posted about flywheel lightening. Might help with your question.

right now I would say I am an above novice rider, but not an expert yet, right now I have a walet full of money and no bike for myself, so guys you know what that means,, my shorts are on fire to spend soem cash. I started looking at a CR500 project bike, then backec off that , then found a KTM380 and thought about that too long, from the writeups I have seen I like the characteristics atributed to the KTM200 or the KDX220 strangley enough a 2001 and newer of either will cost me about the same. anyway I want a trail rider with good manners, and the more I interface with guys on smaller 4 strokes I tend not to want one, just because of the maintenance, I don't hear the same on the 650 4 strokes but an not sure if this is true. I want a torque bike with good off idle manners and good climbing capability. no place I ride right now is flat, I want good range and distance and OK street manners. figure 25% street useage

Yes, I have explained this so many times. People just dont get it. I mean you (Denny) probably saw my comment on PS about the heavy flywheel and the company claiming, need more torque get heavy. Bullshit. Its so simple I wish I had a scanner to copy the torque page out of my physics book so people can visualize what actually happens.
