1978 JR50 losses power when given gas.

Looking for help getting my old JR50 running for my son, new carb due to sitting for so many years, points replaced due to same reason. Now I can get it to start fairly easily idles great but when my son tries to give it gas it boggs down and dies. Do I need to rebuild the top end cannot get an accirate reading on the compression.
