Default Funny story

Something funny I ran across on a diesel site I go to. It actually happened to the guy too, it isn't a story. Enjoy. ...And then there was the time when I first got my stick welder, and made the mistake of reading the book that came with it(There's a reason we don't do this guys...)

"Says right here that you can use this here welder to "cut" steel with too"

Ok, lessee, crank it up to full power, start the arc, till the metal gets molten hot, ten plung the stick down through it, and continue in this fashion...

Too easy. I thought I'd try to cut off an old lawnmower blade for practice. Mounted the thing in the vice, put on the dark helmut, and cranked 'er up to full power.

Works great,

What I didn't realize was in the dark, I couldn't see the piece of metal fall off. I also didn't realize that I had a plastic bucket of oil beneath the vice. I also didn't realize that carpet on the shop floor isn't a good idea when welding. I also didn't realize that molten metal would melt through a plastic bucket of oil....

Soooo, the bucket catches on fire, the bucket melts through, the oil leaks into the carpet which then catches on fire, which then starts to make it's way over to my old workbench made out of 2x4s,......You know the rest.

The funny part was when the Mrs. came down and said "Honey, the whole living room is full of smoke, what'cha up to down here?" All I could think of to say was "yeah, this welder does smoke a bit, I'll have to put in some kind of ventilation system I guess!! Got away with that one.....

Needless to say, I had to get a new fire extinguisher, and change my shorts, and remove the carpet!!
