Default Just got an old polaris 250 r es, help please

I just picked up an 86 polaris 250 res. It had been sitting for 5 years since the previous owner passed away. I put in a new battery, new hoses to carb and oiler. New oil and gas. Took the carb out and cleaned it thouroughly. New plug. Put it back together. It started and ran for about 25 seconds and died. It would not start again with eiher.
I put some wd40 in the plug hole and it back fired which showed me it had compression, it sounds like it has compression. Put a flashlight in the tank and it had shellack crub in it. So, I have taken off the tank and am cleaning it completely. It has fire.
In the mean time I took off the carb again and cleaned it a second time.
If It does not start when I get through cleaning the tank do you have any suggestions?

also, how do I make this thing faster?

I would put money that there is something living in the exhaust. If it was sitting that long I am guessing something is calling your exhaust home. I had problems with a 250R ATV that would fire but would not stay running. We found a whole nest in the head pipe. If you get it started again see if you have good pressure coming out your exhaust. another sign of this is smoke coming out of you carb. The real easy way to test this is to take the exhaust off and start it up. You will really piss of the neighbors but it will tell you if it is the exhaust. Ways to make it faster see if someone makes an aftermarket exhaust. that is where I would start.

you might have a hard time finding "go fast parts" for an older polaris but look hard and you never know. I noticed you said you put new lines on. did you blead your oiler??? I blew up a sled once by putting new oil lines on and not bleading them properly... make sure you have oil going all the way to the carb. and like banshee said. id take the exhaust off and make sure its empty of stowaways... good luck!!

there is a ad in teh back of dirtwheels that does just polaris go fast stuff. i'm not the perso to help here i actually hate polaris's with a passion sorry. if you need any tech help i can help maybe a bit but go-blow-or-roll is our polaris tech. he's a polaris mechanic by trade. and oh yeah just for the record he rides yamahas

thanks for the tips, I worked another 2 hours on it tonight with no success. I took the carb off for the third time and cleaned it very well. When I put it back together, and hooked it all up and cleaned the thank out well and used
some oil in the cylander to make sure the rings had compression it back fired and blew the carb loose. It never started though.
Could it be that there is a short in the kill switch?
I will check on the stowaway critter in the exhaust

when you get a few years on you and own both sides of most of this stuff you will realize you can have favorites but after a point "brand loyalty" has no point.

i have been on both sides of alot of those. i;ve owned fords, GM's, mopars, nissan, and others. and chevys are the best ha ha

i;ve owned or ridden hondas, yamahas, kawis, suzis,and polaris

frankly i loike them all except honda 4 pokes and polaris. that just my opinion. oh yeah brand loyalty is what sells there guy. brand loyality is just part of capitalism.

Thanks, I finally gave up after doing everything I could and most of it 3 times. I had one Polaris dealer in my area tell me they wouldnt work on it because it was too old and was not worth their time. Of course, I wont ever spend my cash there.
I trailered it to the other one about 40 miles away, opend the horse trailer up and then pushed it in the door to the tech dept. They were so impressed with how nice it looked (a widow had kept it stored indoors for the last 5 years since her husband died) that they agreed to get it running.
I will report back.
I find it very frustrating to not be able to figure something out that I think I should be able to figure out.
